Bentleys Maps specialises in reproductions of antique maps. The maps are created by hand using materials and methods which are as close as is possible to those used in the creation of the originals.
The pleasure of owning an original masterpiece from the 17th or 18th century has, till now, been the reserve of a privileged few. However, our reproductions rival the finest achievements of the cartographer's art with a product that will satisfy even the most discerning of collectors.

Our range of maps covers all the continents of the world, with particular emphasis on European countries and Africa. The maps of Italy and Africa are particularly impressive. All size requirements are catered for. Our large scale planispheres are over 2 x 1.5 meters in size whilst some maps are as small as A4 format.
Our engraved maps employ the 16th century xylographic technique. Xylography uses a copper engraving plate and a manual printing press onto paper which has a high cotton content. The fibers in the cotton based paper are much more able to accept the stresses created by the deep incisions from the plate. This results in a pleasing texture to the map. The print is then mounted 'at intervals' onto a pure linen backing sheet. The colouring of the work is done in water-colour by artists experienced in re-creating the ambience of the original map.
Our litho prints offer the same 'look' of our engraved maps using the more modern printing technique of lithography which dates back to the early 1800's. For a complete explanation of the processes used, please follow the link to about our maps.
